Average Car Detailing Prices in New York

The average price of a car detailing service in New York is $168.90. That’s 4.5% more than the rest of the country and the national average of $160.16. This is encouraging news for many detailers in the state, but it only tells us part of the story.

Most and Least Expensive Cities in New York

Where we begin to see the real comparison is when we look at prices between cities within the state.

The cities with the most expensive car detailing prices in New York are White Plains, New York City, and Yonkers. Their prices hit $348 at the top end of the scale, which are significantly higher than the national average. That means a detailer in New York could be charging more than double that of those in other states.

The least expensive cities are Buffalo, Yonkers, and Colonie where you can get a car detailing service for as little as $60. (Which is less than half of the national average.)

These figures highlight a huge variation in car detailing prices between cities. Depending where you are in the state, you could be making more than double – or less than half – of the national average.

Range of Car Detailing Prices in New York

The range of car detailing prices in New York can be seen across the state, and even within the same cities. Nowhere more so than in Yonkers, which appears in both the most expensive and the least expensive lists. The price range in Yonkers is a whopping $260. You can get a detail for as little as $65, and all the way up to $325.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, New York City also has a big variation at a range of $200. With the largest population size, there are more detailers and therefore, more room for discrepancy.

From a customer perspective, it would be difficult to justify spending hundreds of dollars more depending on where they go in the city. And it’s even harder for detailing businesses to handle those types of customer objections on price. For that reason, detailers should be aiming to bring their prices up in order to close that gap.

Large pricing ranges, as illustrated in New York state, can be damaging to the industry as a whole, driving down prices and the value customers put on the work. This is where knowledge of the data is key. Detailers should know their worth and have the confidence to set prices that align more closely with the high end of the state average.

The Bottom Line

Look beyond your local competition when setting your prices and revisit pricing on a regular basis. Avoid trying to undercut your competition on price because that then becomes a race to the bottom. Of course, there are also other factors to consider, including the population size and the number of car detailing services. But by coming up with a pricing strategy based on statewide data, you’ll ensure that you’re maximizing your profit potential.
